Jenelle and Matt met in high school. They dated for a while, then became friends. They connected again a few years after college and they instantly knew they were meant to spend their lives together.
Matt decided to propose to Jenelle at their home in Westbrook. They had been working hard on building a new deck for weeks, and were finally having friends over for a cookout. Jenelle had just returned home from a work trip when Matt pulled her out to the deck to show her the progress he made while she was gone. “I could tell he was really nervous and something was up,” she says. “He started telling me something about how much he loves me, then cut himself short, dropped to one knee, and proposed. I was in complete shock.” She said, “YES!” and before she knew it, friends and family arrived to celebrate their engagement.
The couple had taken many trips to Peaks Island, just off the coast of Portland, in the past and decided it was the perfect place for their wedding.
They decided to head to the island with their families and bridal party a couple of days before the big event at the Inn on Peaks Island. “We wanted a few extra days to spend with all of our close friends and family,” Jenelle says. The first night they had a cook out to catch up with everyone. On Friday they all rented golf carts and cruised around the island before the rehearsal dinner.
On the morning of the big day, Jenelle woke early before all the chaos for a walk along the ocean. She got ready with her bridesmaids and, before she knew it, it was 4 p.m. and it was time to walk down the aisle.
“I remember my first glimpse of Matt,” she says. “He looked happy, nervous, and excited all at once!” When their officiant announced them “Husband and Wife” Jenelle had never felt happier. “It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”
After the ceremony the couple headed for the beach for some photos with Molly and Victoria Co. They held their reception under a tent and had a blast with their family and friends. “The dance floor was packed all night and we danced until they kicked us out!” Jenelle says. The couple ended their night with a ride in their decked-out golf card around the island as newlyweds. “It truly turned out to be the best day of our lives.”
In Her Words
We asked Jenelle more about the big day. Here’s what she said…
I wish…we could do it all again!
I didn’t realize…that the day was going to fly by so quickly. I still think to myself, wow, our wedding is already over! After months and months of planning, it went by in the blink of an eye.
One of my favorite moments was…walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Matt’s first expression.
I’m glad that…we chose Peaks Island and spent three days out there to relax and spend time with our friends and family.
I really liked…all of our vendors! Choosing the right vendors really makes the day go smoother and takes stress away from you so you can enjoy your special day.
My advice to other couples is
…take a minute at your wedding with your new spouse to step back and watch everyone for a minute. See what you created after months of planning. Watch your friends and family interacting and enjoying themselves. It’s really a beautiful thing, and it may be the only event in your life you have all of your family and friends together!
