Sara and Joe, who live in Connecticut, fell in love with Maine the first time they visited a few summers ago. The couple met in 2006 at Sacred Heart University and got engaged on Christmas Eve, 2012. “We decided to open presents that night and the ring was in a big box, in another box, in another box…” Sara says.
When Sara and Joe started to plan their wedding, they wanted an intimate, laid back, and relaxing place. They chose the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. “We just couldn’t think of a better place,” Sara says.
The couple had a small wedding with 60 guests. “We almost had a big wedding with over 100 guests, but we felt like it was overwhelming and we just wanted our closest family and friends,” Sara says. “It was so special, and our guests complimented us on how much fun it was and how the atmosphere was cozy and intimate. Having a smaller wedding gave Joe and I the chance to spend more time on special details and more time with our family and friends.”
Their nautical wedding featured navy and white stripes, anchors, chalkboards, and mason jars. Sara, who loves to bake, made over 100 lobster cookies, which she placed on her guests’ plates as a favor. “I worked very hard on the details and wanted the wedding to represent us as a couple,” she says. She made all of the chalkboards, s’mores for the fire pit outside of the resort, and the groom’s gifts, which included a shadow box containing tickets from all of the movies the couple had gone to since they started dating.
Sara also had a guitar pick engraved with some of the lyrics to the couple’s first dance song, which she presented to her guitar-playing groom. Sara also had a print created depicting the state of Maine for their wedding guests to sign in lieu of a guest book. “It’s now displayed in our home!”
In Her Words
We asked Sara more about their big day. Here’s what she said…
…I could relive our ceremony again. We wrote our own vows and it made everything that much more special and romantic.
One of my favorite moments was
…the toasts! It was so special hearing our family and friends say the sweetest things to us—especially my brother. He is in the military and it was the first time I had seen him in 8 months.
I’m glad that
…it rained. Our ceremony was supposed to be outside by the water, but the ground was wet from the rain the night before. As soon as our ceremony began it started to pour and you could see the rain behind us coming down on the windows. It was so romantic and cozy. And as soon as the ceremony ended, the rain stopped.
I really liked
…that we got to spend a lot of time with our guests. It was a small wedding and a lot of people stayed for the weekend.
