Ryan and Ashley met in college through mutual friends. He went to Thomas College and she attended the University of Southern Maine. They remained friends through the years and ran into each other during a night out in Portland’s Old Port. They were both single, so Ryan asked Ashley out on a date. It would be her last first date ever.

Ryan’s proposal took Ashley by compete surprise. The couple decided to exchange Christmas gifts at their home in Gorham before heading out to celebrate with their families. “We exchanged gifts and while I was picking up, Ryan told me he had one more gift but that I had to go upstairs while he finished putting it together,” Ashley says. “I instantly thought that it must be furniture.” What Ryan was actually doing was lighting hundreds of tea lights on a large board that spelled out, “Ashley, will you marry me?”

Once he had it set up on the living room floor and turned out all the lights, he asked Ashley to come downstairs. Of course she said “Yes!”

The couple held a New Year’s Eve wedding at The Landing at Pine Point in Scarborough. “It had the feeling of an old church mixed with a modern feel that we both love,” Ashley says.

The couple included old family wedding photos into their wedding day, putting them on display for everyone to see. “Both Ryan and I come from parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles that are still married,” she says. “We wanted to honor that commitment and had wedding photos of our parents and grandparents on display.”

In Her Words
We asked Ashley a little more about their big day. Here’s what she said…

I wish…I could do it all over again, and I wouldn’t change a moment!

One of my favorite moments was…when I looked around the dance floor and saw everyone laughing and smiling and having a great time. It made all the work well worth it!

I’m glad that…we decided to have live music, specifically by the Jim Ciampi Band! By far the best investment, as I don’t think you can put a price on you and your guests having a great time. Music is key!

I really liked…that I took the time with the planning and started early. I had a year to plan and I got everything that I possibly could done early so that I could enjoy myself near the end.
