Kaitlyn and Jon love to sail, so it’s no surprise that they met at a yacht club! The Arundel Yacht Club in Kennebunkport to be exact. Kaitlyn’s parents are club members and Jon used to manage the club and marina.

When they met Kaitlyn was living in Denver, Colorado. She spent the summers back home in Kennebunk and went sailing with her parents quite a bit. Her parents were the ones to introduce the couple. “Once I moved back to Maine in 2013, Jon and I decided there was something between us, so we decided to start dating,” Kaitlyn says.

Jon decided to propose to Kaitlyn in one of her favorite spots—St. George, Maine. Her family used to have a camp there. They took their dog along for the ride and took a walk along the beach. “As I was throwing the ball for our dog, Jon got down on one knee behind me and as soon as I turned around I was in shock!” she says. “I immediately told him to “stand up, you’re getting your pants muddy!” He laughed and asked, “So is that a yes?”

The couple chose to get married on the ocean in Maine. The couple wanted to look beyond Kaitlyn’s hometown of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, and the Smith House on Westport Island was exactly what they were looking for. “We got the whole property for a week, so we never felt rushed when preparing for the wedding!” Kaitlyn says.

Jon and Kaitlyn planned the entire wedding themselves. “This made us feel way more involved and invested in our wedding day,” Kaitlyn says. “The wedding was absolutely perfect for us and turned out even better than we had expected!”

The couple decided they did not want to see each other before the ceremony, so she got ready with her bridesmaids in one house and he got ready with his groomsmen in another. “I spent most of my day with my bridesmaids, eating brunch, having mimosas, and just relaxing,” Kaitlyn says. “Unfortunately, Jon spent most of the day continuing to set up the ceremony and reception area with his best man and my brother!” He did have time, however, to write Kaitlyn three cards throughout the course of the day, that were delivered by his brother.

The ceremony was joyful and emotional. “The first moment we saw each other I said, “You’re pretty!” and Jon said, “You’re handsome.” It’s now an ongoing joke between us,” Kaitlyn says.

Immediately following the ceremony the couple joined their photographer for photos then joined their guests under the tent for their reception. “Of course it had to be a sailclot tent!” Kaitlyn says. “The evening was perfect. We had such a great time celebrating with family and friends.”

In Her Words
We asked the bride more about the big day. Here’s what Kaitlyn said…

I wish…we had more time to talk to our loved ones at the ceremony.

I didn’t realize…how fast the wedding day would actually go!

One of my favorite moments was…seeing each other fir the first time at the ceremony. We were both an emotional wreck—in a good way!

I’m glad that…we planned the whole wedding ourselves.

I really liked…how rustic and chic our wedding turned out to be. We had a picture in our minds of what I wanted the wedding to look like, and it was amazing to have it come together so well.
