Matt and Sabrina met at work and became fast friends. Matt made Sabrina laugh incessantly with his quirky humor and Sabrina was constantly challenging and surprising Matt with her knowledge of football. It didn’t take long for their friendship to turn romantic.
The couple dated for five years and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Evelyn, before Matt proposed on January 4, 2015. Sabrina was relaxing on the couch while Matt and Evelyn played. Hearing that her daughter had made her way to her bedroom, Sabrina got up to check out the shenanigans. “I heard Evelyn’s little footsteps scurrying as fast as they could across our wood floor,” Sabrina says. “I turned to her and she was in front of me with an open box that had something sparkly in it. As my eyes focused, I realized what it was.” Matt was instantly by her side, on one knee, proposing.
Matt, from York, and Sabrina, from Augusta, decided to get married in Portland where they now live. They fell in love with Grace as soon as they had the tour. They decided to hold their ceremony in the Sanctuary and their reception downstairs in the Great Room.
Their wedding was held on a lovely 60-degree day in the beginning of November. “I woke up that morning with butterflies in my stomach, my girls by my side, ready to get married!” Sabrina says. After their emotional First Look, Sabrina and Matt performed a traditional Chinese wedding tea ceremony with their parents. “My family is from Hong Kong, and I wanted to pay homage to my culture,” Sabrina says. “We served tea to each sets of parents and it was so sweet to see both sets of parents ready to see us off into this next chapter of our lives together.”
After a photo session with their wedding party in Portland’s Old Port district, it was time for the ceremony. Everyone assumed their positions and Sabrina started walking into the Sanctuary. “After finally reaching the top of the stairs to the mezzanine, I realized I had been holding my breath the entire way,” Sabrina says. “I gasped when I finally saw Matthew again, looking even more handsome than when I left him moments ago, waiting for me.”
In Her Words
We asked the bride more about the big day. Here’s what Sabrina said…
I didn’t realize…how much fun we would have.
One of my favorite moments was…our First Look. Matthew and I hadn’t seen each other since the day before, and I will never forget the look on his face or the butterflies I felt when I saw him.
I’m glad that…we took the time to write our own vows and make something traditional fit us.
I really liked
…being able to have our friends and family in one place to celebrate together.
