Ellen, from Dedham, Maine, met Josh while living and working in New Zealand. They started dating a few months before she returned home. After six months of extreme long distance dating, she and her parents traveled to New Zealand to meet him.
It was during this trip that Josh proposed. During their visit the group tackled a three-day hike, which was planned by Ellen’s dad to see how the couple would treat each other. It poured for three days straight, and the couple passed dad’s test. Josh proposed on the beach and Ellen happily (and in tears) said ‘Yes!’ The couple parted ways for another six months before their wedding, which was held in Maine.
“What could be better than a summer wedding in Bar Harbor?” Ellen says. Plus, having the wedding on her home turf meant that Josh could meet the rest of her family. The couple were married in Ellsworth and held their reception at the Hulls Cove Schoolhouse in Bar Harbor.
On the morning of the big day, the girls relaxed at Ellen’s parent’s house getting ready while the guys had a big breakfast together. The couple turned to technology to share their wedding ceremony with family in New Zealand and South Africa via Skype. One of Ellen’s bridesmaids set up a projector to share a collaboration of congratulatory videos from the couple’s New Zealand friends who couldn’t make the trip to Maine. The reception gave the couple time to say good bye to Ellen’s Maine friends and family, as she moved to New Zealand to live with her new husband just a few days after the wedding.
In Her Words
We asked the bride to share more about the big day. Here’s what Ellen said…
I didn’t realize
…that leaving the day in other peoples’ hands would actually stress me out less and everything would get done.
One of my favorite moments was
…taking pictures. Our photographers were so fun and we had a fun time doing different poses.
I really liked
…the video clips from New Zealand, since only some of my husband’s friends were able to come to the wedding.
My advice to other couples is
…don’t stress out about the day. You won’t notice the little details if they don’t get done, and nobody else will, either. Enjoy it and make it last, because it’s over so fast.
