Stephanie, from Blue Hill, Maine, and Nick, from New Hampshire, met as students at Norwich University. Nick was getting ready to graduate and commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army and Stephanie was in the middle of working on her graduate degree.
“We met only a few days before he graduated, and spent the whole summer together before he jetted off to Lawton, Oklahoma,” Stephanie says. They spent a year apart. After Stephanie finished her master’s degree, she moved to Oklahoma to be with Nick.
It was at their home that Nick popped the question. The couple was getting ready to move to Savannah, Georgia after Nick’s training ended. Stephanie spent her time as a stay-at-home dog mom while they waited to move.
“One day, Nick called to say he was on his way home, but it took him way longer than normal,” Stephanie says. She had planned dinner to be ready when he got home, so she was pretty mad when he got home late, only to spend 20 minutes in the bedroom changing. During dinner Nick kept trying to get Jax, their great Pyrenees puppy, to come over to the table. The puppy wouldn’t mind, so Nick picked him up and placed him in Stephanie’s lap. On his collar was a tag that said, “Will you marry me?” Nick asked the all-important question, and Stephanie said, “Yes!”
“Being from Maine, I could never imagine getting married anywhere else,” Stephanie says. “I think that summer in Maine is one of the most wonderful things in the world.” The couple settled on a wedding in Castine, a quaint coastal town with lots of charm.
The couple drove up to Castine from Georgia a few days before the wedding. “We are notorious for always trying to squeeze a lot into a little bit of time,” Stephanie says. “The whole wedding weekend was a rush!” The couple didn’t have much time because they found out that Nick would be deploying less than a week after their wedding day.
While the girls got ready on the morning of the big day, the guys enjoyed a round of golf. Nick and Stephanie exchanged small gifts and prepared for their ‘first look.’ The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception went off without a hitch, and guests partied the night away before heading to a small bar in Castine for an after-party. It was the perfect way to start their new life together as husband and wife!
In Her Words
We asked the bride more about the big day. Here’s what Stephanie said…
I wish…I was less stressed out during the day. Everything was perfect, and there was no need to worry about things.
I didn’t realize…how many pictures we would take—but I am so glad we did!
One of my favorite moments was…our ‘first look!’
I’m glad that…it was too hot for a day in July.
I really liked…our caterer! Our food was fantastic!
My advice to other brides is
…remember that the day is about you and your husband. Try not to worry too much about your guests and vendors. It will all come together perfectly!
