Bethany and Dan both grew up in upstate New York in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. After a move to Portland Maine—and a proposal in Ireland—the couple planned a wedding on Peaks Island in Casco Bay.
“We had taken little day trips out to Peaks Island and fell in love with the Trefethen-Evergreen Improvement Association—TEIA Club—and its gorgeous views,” Bethany says. “We also liked the idea of having a Maine island wedding and Peaks was the shortest ferry ride from Portland, so logistically it made sense. We figured that our friends and family, which mostly came from out of state, would enjoy having the option of staying in and around Portland or on Peaks Island.”
The ceremony and reception were both held at TEIA Club’s 100-year-old sailing club. The ceremony was outside overlooking the ocean dotted with sailboats, the cocktail hour was on the wrap-around porch, and the reception was held inside.
“The building was built as a casino and dance hall in 1910—the club was built for live music and dancing the night away,” Bethany says. The couple hired Portland-based Velourosaurus, who played the perfect mix of music to keep everyone on the dance floor.
Bethany had worked in the wedding industry before moving to Maine, so she was more than happy to plan her wedding to Dan herself. “Our amazing friends and family were extremely helpful along the way as well,” she says. “We could not have pulled it all together without them.”
The couple worked to create a wedding that was distinctly them. “We steered away from tradition by cutting out certain things that we weren’t that into, like having a traditional wedding cake,” Bethany says.
In Her Words
We asked the bride more about her big day. Here’s what Bethany says…
…we could have stayed and danced until morning.
One of my favorite moments was
…our first dance.
I’m glad that
…we fell in love and moved to Maine.
I really liked
…everything—especially the sunset.
My advice to other brides is
…to try to enjoy every moment and the special times you have with everyone—the night goes by so fast.
