Maine Wedding • Abby & Tom • Hermon

Posted: December 19, 2012

This couple’s wedding theme of “Rustic Elegance” was played out at the Morgan Hill Event Center near Bangor, where Abby and Tom live. “I had always wanted to get married in an old barn,” Abby says. “Years ago I had driven past Morgan Hill and thought that the location would be a beautiful place to get married.” When the couple got engaged in 2010, that’s just where they started when planning their wedding.
Abby and Tom met as freshmen at Gordon College in Massachusetts. She hails from Bangor and he from Connecticut. “I was introduced to Tom by our mutual friends, and had always thought that he was such a gentleman!” Abby says. “I remember commenting that he was the sort of man I would love to marry someday.”
Once Tom had gotten over his crush on Abby’s best friend, the couple started dating. He decided to ask Abby to marry him while they were working together at a summer camp in New Hampshire in 2010. “We would have a few days off a week and we used that time to spend as much time together as we could,” Abby says.
On their last day off together at camp, Tom told Abby they were doing something special. He told her to get dressed up and head to their staff office and wait for someone to come get her. Eventually another staff member met her, dressed as a waiter, and had Abby follow him to the main hall.
“As I entered the room there was jazz music playing and in the center of the empty room was a table set with dinner that Tom had prepared,” Abby says. Tom, who was dressed in a tux, asked friends to serve the couple dinner while the couple watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which is Abby’s favorite romantic movie.
At the end of the movie, Tom walked Abby back to her cabin. Since boys weren’t allowed on the girl’s side of camp, they stopped halfway, and Tom got down on one knee and proposed.

In Their Words
We asked the bride and and more about their big day. Here’s what they said…
I wish
…my father could have been at our wedding. It was hard to see his vacant seat. He passed away in 2008 and it was hard not having him with me on the best day of our life.
One of my favorite moments was…kissing Abby at the altar and throughout the reception.
One of my favorite moments was
…when I saw the tears in Tom’s eyes as I walked up the aisle to meet him.
I’m glad that…Tom and I had a long engagement to plan out the details of our wedding.
My advice to other brides is…have a receiving line. Yes, it’s rather old fashioned but it gives you time to see your guests. It’s hard to make it to every table during the reception so spend the time and have a receiving line.
