What started out as a hobby 10 years ago for Megan Stetler and Marci Larson has turned into a full-blown job. Clickin Chicks Photography
has been a business for over three years, and these women get to watch their business grow together as friends.
How did you get started in photography?
Both of us started playing around with cameras when we were young and it blossomed from there. We found ourselves being the ones who were volunteering to document events for friends and family and pulling over the car to take a picture of something beautiful that caught our eye. From there we started to study more about photography and slowly our passion turned into a business.
What do you love about wedding photography?
Wedding photography is a chance to for us to be a part of one of the most special days a family experiences. We love meeting the family, hearing their stories, and building relationships with people. It's fun to get caught up in the excitement and love of such a special day and try to capture that in our images.
What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
Besides all of the technical challenges such as lighting or weather, we find the most challenging part just simply trying to fit it all in. There are two of us, which makes it easier, but it always seems like at the end of the day we wish we could have had a few more hours to get more pictures! After the wedding, we always say, "Oh, we should have tried this!" or "Oh, this would have been neat to do." No matter how many photos we take, we always wish we could have more time with the bride and groom! We always shoot every wedding with one another, and that makes things go more smoothly.
What should clients know about your style of photography?
We try to be as unobtrusive as possible. One of the biggest compliments we get is when people tell us that they didn't even feel like we were there, yet we still captured all of the moments in the way that they wanted. Being fun and personable is important to us, and we tend to attract clients with a similar outlook. Posed shots are fun, but we like to capture the day, not just set it up. At the end of the day the most beautiful images are the ones that have captured a feeling.
When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
Marci is busy raising her two daughters, Olivia, 3, and Natalie, 6 months. They are an energetic duo! Megan spends time with family, her dog, Maddy, and taking classes. We both work outside of our photography business as well—Marci as a PE teacher and Megan as a school counselor.
How has your photography style changed over the years?
The more we have learned and studied about photography has definitely changed the way we take pictures. Many years ago, we feel like most of the good photos we took were simply luck. Now, we realize how much planning goes into taking quality photographs and that has changed our styles a lot. What we do now is much more purposeful. We also have become a lot more creative!
What inspires you when you pick up your camera?
When we pick up our cameras we are inspired by beauty. It sounds cliche, but it really is true. We are seeking out a beautiful landscape, a beautiful subject, or a beautiful moment and trying to capture what we see so that others can see the same thing. It's so challenging to capture everything in a moment—not just what you're seeing, but also what you're feeling—and have that come across in your work.
Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
We love our business and we hope it's nearly the same in 5 years. The only thing that we would change is that we hope that we keep improving and expanding our knowledge base as photographers. We can't believe how much we've learned in the past few years. We're excited to keep learning and growing as artists and our business gives us the opportunity to do just that.
