Russ and Liz, from Russell Caron Wedding Photography, work together to photograph weddings in Maine and throughout New England. Anyone that watches them can tell they absolutely love what they do!

How did you get started in photography?
Russ sold cameras as a kid in the 70’s…which led to being persuaded to shoot his first wedding for a co-worker. Liz got started after she met Russ in 2012, and took to photography rather rapidly. Russ likes to say he saw the artistry in Liz’s cell phone photos and then he taught her how to use a "real" camera!

What do you love about wedding photography?
We love that we get to spend time doing what we love most on one of the best days of our clients’ lives, when everyone is filled with joy and happiness. We love our ability to create artistry from the people, places, and moments we share with the clients on wedding day.

What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
The uncontrolled use of smartphones and tablets by guests, most notably during the wedding ceremony. These unsuspecting people move around and often get between ourselves—trying to work discreetly and without flash from a distance—and the couple. We love it when this problem is eliminated before it’s had a chance to happen when the day is decreed to be an unplugged wedding, meaning no technology use is allowed, at least during the ceremony.

What should clients know about your style of photography?
Russ and Liz blend pieces of several elemental styles into their wedding images. These styles, most suited to the various segments of the day, include photojournalism, classics, portraiture, and posed photos that look like they aren’t posed at all.

When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
We love to cook, walk, use our cameras for food photography and personal projects, and teach business and photography courses.

How can the couple help YOU on their wedding day?
By letting us organically be ourselves; unencumbered by anything because the client trusts us to do what we do best. We’ll naturally find the moments and images that make our work uniquely ours.

How has your photography style changed over the years?
Our style changes all the time; it is paramount that it does. It has naturally evolved to be more precise, concise, and marked by the evolving styles of Russ and Liz individually. Together there are several signature image styles, such as certain bridal portraits, real moments, images that rely on the use of specific lenses and focal lengths, and the quality of lighting resulting from our mastery of our off-camera flash systems.

What sorts of things inspire you when you pick up your camera?
We love symmetry, light, shadows, trees, clouds, shapes, reflections, color, contrasts, and textures. We love knowing how to anticipate the exact moment a person is going to produce an emotion that will tell the story of the wedding day so dramatically.

Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years we will continue to photograph fine weddings throughout Maine, New England, and beyond for clients that love our style, approach, and amazing images. We’ll also be teaching and mentoring, as well as doing a lot of writing. And maybe that long-planned book will have been written.
