Lexi and Matt, from Lexi Lowell Photography, are a husband and wife team specializing in weddings and engagements. They bring a couple's perspective to everything they do. A big thanks to Lexi for answering our questions below!

How did you get started in photography?
Since I was a kid, I've always enjoyed taking and looking at pictures, and I've always been involved in the arts. I danced for 16 years (starting at age four) and later got involved in musical theatre, performing in several local productions. As I got a little older, photography transitioned from a hobby into a profession. It was the perfect opportunity to embark on a career while still being artistic and doing something I loved. I took a bunch of classes, second shot with a couple of awesome photographers, and spent a lot of time practicing and refining my style. The more I did it, the more I realized just how much I loved capturing such special moments in people's lives!

My husband, Matt, is my dedicated second shooter. He, too, has always really enjoyed photography. The first couple years I was in business, Matt would join me for each wedding. At the time, he was the unsung "pack pony" who carried all my gear around but didn't photograph. We soon realized that it would make a lot more sense (and be a better value for our clients) if he were to join me in photographing. We've been photographing weddings and engagement sessions together for nearly four years now.

What do you love about wedding photography?
I love working with my clients! It's such an honor to be invited into my clients' lives on such an intimate, joyful, and memorable day. It's incredibly rewarding to know I'm responsible for capturing all the tenderness, excitement, stolen glances, little moments, and hidden details that make a wedding day so unique.

What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
There's never any lack of things to do or photograph on a wedding day. That's why it's so important to have a good game plan. Keeping everything on schedule can sometimes be a challenge, but it's also a huge opportunity to impress your clients. We work really hard to develop (and stick to) a workable photography timeline, and we love being able to tell our clients when they're ahead of schedule.

What should clients know about your style of photography?

Matt and I spend most of the day capturing candid, photojournalism-inspired images that tell the story of the day. We then compliment this with artistic, intimate portraits of the couple. Our approach is relaxed, and we work hard to help our couples have fun and feel comfortable in front of the camera.

When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
Matt and I enjoy spending time outdoors exploring the beautiful state of Maine with our dog, Finnlay. I love musical theatre and dance, so I always like a night out. Matt is a musician who records his own music.

How can the couple help YOU on their wedding day?
By relaxing, being themselves, and enjoying the moment. The best pictures happen when the couple can completely forget they're being photographed.

How has your photography style changed over the years?
The biggest change has been adding Matt into the mix. We're to the point these days where we have a very organized and streamlined process. Beyond that, we've spent a lot of time working with off-camera flash and artificial light sources. We love to shoot natural light whenever possible, but we all know that lighting changes throughout a wedding day (whether it's the time of day or the location). Maybe it's a gorgeous sunset or a dark reception room. Depending on what it is we're trying to capture, we often incorporate some sort of off-camera lighting.

What sorts of things inspire you when you pick up your camera?
Couples who love being together! Our beautiful state!

Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years, I plan to continue growing the business and doing what I absolutely enjoy: photographing couples who are in love.
