Kate Crabtree is a budding Bangor-based wedding photographer. All of her photography—be it weddings or fashion shoots—are bathed in gorgeous light. Either she has an in with Mother Nature or she's incredibly talented.
How did you get started in photography?
I discovered photography in my high school photography class. Back then, we didn't use digital cameras—it was all film. Having limited exposures really taught me to think before I shoot. Photography remained only a passion until I thought, "hey, why not do what I love?" The rest is history.
What do you love about wedding photography?
Everything! The emotion, the rituals of the day, the details that the couple painstakingly put together to make their wedding unique. A wedding is such an interesting narrative, and as a lover of stories—I earned my master's in English! I love having the opportunity to photograph these aforementioned things to tell the story of my couples and the story of their wedding day.
What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
Not being given enough time to shoot formals. I completely understand that most couples want to get to the party as soon as possible after the wedding, and I can work quickly and efficiently, but I'd rather not rush too much to make sure you get a variety of gorgeous photos with you and your significant other. This can be solved by doing some or all of the formals before the wedding—an option that continues to become more and more popular with my clients!
What should clients know about your style of photography?
I consider myself a photojournalist. My primary goal is to capture your wedding day as it unfolds, but I do pose and direct couples during formals. By paying attention to how couples interact with one another, I am able to pose them in a way that feels natural and emphasizes their best attributes.
When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
I enjoy reading (I'm a big young adult lit buff and am very excited that everyone is reading The Hunger Games right now!), running, and watching great TV (I'm currently addicted to Parks and Recreation). Because I was a springboard diver in high school, I also enjoy getting back on the board from time to time.
How can the couple help YOU on their wedding day?
It helps so much if the couple provides me with a clear timeline. It's also helpful if the couple relaxes. I provide couples with a questionnaire to make sure I get all the information I need about their wedding day. I tell my clients that even if a few things go wrong here and there that they're going to be married at the end of the day. That's pretty awesome—so smile!
What sorts of things inspire you when you pick up your camera?
Gorgeous natural light, texture, and emotion. If there's love in the air, I'm all sorts of inspired (and probably a little giddy too)!
Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
My goal is to be working with amazing couples, making great friends, and to feel like I'm not working at all but rather living a lifestyle that I love. I also wouldn't mind a couple of destination weddings!
