Patrick had plans to ask Colleen to marry him while the couple was out choosing and cutting down their own Christmas tree in December 2012. Unfortunately, Colleen decided getting a tree at Home Depot would be much easier. “Patrick tried to change my mind a few times but had no luck,” Colleen says.
After choosing their tree, bringing it home to decorate, and a few hours of babysitting later that night, Colleen returned home around midnight to find Patrick still awake. “He wanted me to open a present early,” she says. “When I got to the small ring box and opened it, I looked at Patrick who was signing, ‘Will you marry me?’” Colleen teaches preschool students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and was completely impressed that Patrick had taught himself how to sign the proposal.
“I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, but my grandparents and other family members live in Saco, Maine,” Colleen says. “Patrick and I are both teachers, so every summer we’ve been together we have vacationed in Saco. It’s where we chose to have our wedding.”
One of the spots where the couple had their engagement photo session with Kate Baker Photography is a spot that overlooks land that has been in Colleen’s family for years. “Maine is such a beautiful place,” Colleen says. “As much as we love it in the summer, winter clearly has a different kind of beauty.”
