What is the Real Maine Wedding of the Year contest?
Each year, the publishers of Real Maine Weddings magazine choose a Maine community in which to host a $100,000 wedding for one lucky couple. Past host communities include Freeport (2011), Portland (2012), and Kennebunkport (2013), Bethel (2014), the Midcoast communities of Camden, Rockland, and Rockport (2015), York (2016), Portland and Peaks Island (2017), Ogunquit (2018), Portland and Waterford (2019), and the host communities for our 2020 contest are Bath and Phippsburg!
How to enter?
Couples create a two minute video on why they love coastal Maine and why they should win this dream wedding on a Maine island.
Submissions can be submitted starting January 1, 2020. Couples will go to the Real Maine Weddings website and fill out the entry information and submit their video. Videos will be accepted until February 13, 2020 and voting will go live on February 14, 2020.
How do you choose the host communities and participating vendors?
Maine is filled with amazing places to get married. We choose our host communities based on location, popularity, and local vendors. We try to use as many local businesses as possible for each of our contests. Not only does the winning couple get an authentic Maine wedding, the host communities get to showcase the amazing talent and services provided by their local businesses.
Do I have to use the vendors involved?
Yes. You must accept the goods and services from the partnering vendors. We have chosen these businesses for a reason—and that is to create a fabulous wedding.
Why are the weddings always on a Friday in the fall?
Maine wedding professionals are incredibly busy on from May through October attending to weekend weddings. The contest is a multi-day event that kicks off on Wednesday. We hold the wedding on a Friday so that the venues and wedding professionals do not have to lose a weekend of business by participating in this giveaway. Fall is a gorgeous time to get married in Maine, and we like to host our wedding in time to make it into the January issue of Real Maine Weddings magazine.
The rules say I can invite 100 people. Can I invite more?
Yes, you can invite more people, however, there will be a cost per person that you will have to pay for each person over 100.
Who should enter the contest?
Any couple who is not already married and who loves Maine should enter this contest. With that being said, it’s not for everyone. You must get married on the days that have already been chosen and use the vendors that have agreed to participate in the contest.
Who are these participating vendors?
We hand-pick the vendors who participate in the Real Maine Wedding of the Year contest. We try to use vendors as close to the host community as possible. In some cases, the host communities do not have a business that offers a certain aspect needed for a wedding—like a stationer or bridal gown boutique, for example. Those vendors are chosen from outside of the area. The goods and services that these vendors offer our winning couple have no cash value, and the winning couple must use the vendors participating in the contest.
What happens if I win the wedding?
We start planning! We accompany you on all of your wedding planning excursions. We are there to support you from the moment you are announced the winner to the end of your wedding event.
I hear certain aspects of the wedding are voted on. How does that work?
The public gets to vote on certain aspects of your wedding. Here’s an example: You go to the jeweler to choose wedding rings. We ask you to choose three of your most favorite rings, which we take photos of and put up on our website for people to vote on. The ring with the most public votes is the one that wins. With that being said, you do have some veto power, which will be discussed in detail with the winning couple. Please visit our current contest blog
to see how the voting works online.
Why do you do it?
Because we love Maine. This contest is not only an amazing event for the couples, their friends, and their families, but it’s an amazing event for the host communities and the wedding industry in general. Our mission is to promote getting married in Maine, and what better way to show off the kind of amazing wedding you can have in Maine than to create one?
